Renovation and Extension in Lorne

Perched on the south side of Lorne, this steep site originally featured a 1970s beach house. Care was taken to build upon the existing subfloor structure so that original window placements could be retained.

The upper-level clerestory window was preserved and enlarged to enhance natural light, while additional bedrooms and amenities were added to a new lower floor level.

A large vertical rammed earth wall has been incorporated into the front façade, rising externally and internally to the upper roof level. Hardwood window and door frames have been utilised for their superior energy efficiency (thermal performance), while Colorbond metal sheet cladding provides robust protection from the breaking surf directly below.

Care was taken to restore key elements of the original structure, with the upper-level addition providing the space and amenity needed to support a growing multi-generational family. Sustainably sourced blackbutt timber has been applied both internally and externally, allowing the home to seamlessly recede into its stunning coastal setting.

Our experience with JCA was everything we had come not to expect! Communications with Josh and his team were clear and timely; therefore the house design came together and was altered in accordance with our feed-back, easily; and the timeframe from beginning to end was great. The project came in on budget and delivered more than we had expected in terms of amenity and style. Family, friends and passers by all enjoy admiring aspects of our JCA design. - Jacinta
